Saint Motel in New York

Indie pop unit Saint Motel’s vibrant “Symphony Under The Stars” tour hit Brooklyn Saturday night, and it more than lived up to its name.

Glittering under a ceiling of stars, members A. J. Jackson, Aaron Sharp, Dak Lerdamornpong and Greg Erwin conducted the crowd like their own personal orchestra.

It’s a dynamic show: the crowd doubling as an active dance floor as the band takes them through a brassy, buoyant setlist of recent releases and fan favorite hits. Opening with an orchestral reimagining of “Puzzle Pieces,” the group segued through tracks like “For Elise,” “Life’s A Gas,” and even debuted a pair of white feathered angel wings for “Hold My Place in Heaven.” The backing of strings and brass instruments turned hits like “Cold Cold Man” and “Sweet Talk” from chirpy to ecstatic.

The sold out Brooklyn Paramount was lively and upbeat, just like the performances. Working in tandem with the band, the show felt like a carefully crafted tango between fan and artist. When lead singer A.J. Jackson lifted a hand in the air, the rest of the crowd's hands raised in return. As he waved from side to side, the audience’s arms swayed with him – right, then center, then left, then center in a hypnotic pattern.

The line between performer and audience further blurred in the encore, when Jackson bobbed and weaved his way through the crowd, dancing and singing along with fans. He even popped up briefly on the upper balcony, greeting an adoring crowd like its benevolent leader. And with the way he was able to whip fans up into a high energy dance party, maybe he was.
