Ninajirachi in Detroit

Australian-born DJ Ninajirachi brought her captivating and energetic sound to Royal Oak Music Theater on February 6th, as a part of her “I Love My Computer” tour. The rising name in electronic music fittingly stopped in the Metro-Detroit area, often considered the birthplace of techno music, and it was easy to see how much the people living in the area were proud of this title.

After a below-freezing wait around the block, the venue filled up quickly with a wonderfully-eclectic group of fans ready to greet the openers. Everyone from the “average joe”, to those dressed in Scene fashion and the rave crowd were present. It was almost impossible to feel out of place at my first show in the genre. Openers Canelle and Rinbossanova wasted no time bringing the energy with differing, but complimentary sounds that set the stage for the rapidly-growing headliner.

As anticipated, Ninajirachi’s set began with the lights off and a suspenseful display of graphics perfectly branded with her all-over-the-place style that remains impressively cohesive. “London Song” started off the set, just as it does on her critically-acclaimed album Fuck My Computer. I would say this song eased the crowd into the more heavy-hitting songs, but there’s no way to ease into something with a banger like this (I mean this in the best way). Following were some notable tracks from her 2024 album girl EDM (disc 1) and a couple covers of artists such as maniken05 and 1tbsp that kept the energy high.

In between the next handful of songs, she addressed the audience to express her excitement and disbelief of the success she has seen in recent times. It was a short but sweet break that quickly jumped back into some of her biggest hits such as the aptly titled “Fuck My Computer” and the song’s remix with fellow electronic artist Frost Children. As I mentioned before it was my first show within this genre, but I can’t imagine another atmosphere as electric and heavy-hitting as the one during these songs. Accompanying the bangers was a series of visuals that were reminiscent of the music videos she has released; an almost dizzying mashup of inverted colors, people dancing, 5g internet towers, and more.

After a quick visit to her 2024 album, we were back finishing off her latest release. Most notably her songs Delete, All I Am, and iPod Touch. As they say, it isn’t over until it’s over - the show carried its energy all the way to the end - at least it seemed like the end. The encore chants began and Ninajirachi came back out swiftly to play one more song. Luckily for those who stayed, she played a brand new song of which the title I can’t recall - but that’s not to say it wasn’t memorable. The encore was huge, and easily as heavy hitting as some of her biggest. The crowd, and myself, will be looking forward to its official release.

You can find Ninajirachi on all major streaming platforms and if you want to experience the energy live, you may have to wait for another US tour. Or you can catch her in Japan later this month.
