NewDad in New York

“Give it up for yourselves! Give it up for New York!” crows NewDad frontwoman Julie Dawson at the end of their vibrant Webster Hall show, “And give it up for chopped cheese!”
It’s a quirky, light note to end a show that so carefully toes the line between gravity and levity.
The somber regret of “Under My Skin,” where the band sings “I threw your jumper in the wash and I hoped you'd wash away/I let myself hurt every day and I hoped you'd bleed the same” is countered by the whimsical shimmer of a bright blue star shaped tambourine keeping rhythm. In the glimpses you can catch while guitarist Seán O'Dowd rocks around his side of the stage, you can find a cheeky “Hi NYC!” written on the tape on his guitar.
These little moments bring more personality to the set, as the show was a noticeably more muted one: although fitting to the band’s gentler indie sensibilities. Where they lacked in energy, they made up for in synergy, working as a cohesive unit to takes fans through a highlight reel of their discography. “Heavyweight,” “Dream of Me,” and “Blue” all drew cheers from the crowd. But new fans fear not, they also treated the audience to the unreleased “Kerosene” and a surprise cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Heads Will Roll,” making even those unfamiliar with the band feel welcome.
It was the kind of concert that was slow to fill the venue, fans trickling in in drips rather than floods. But it wasn’t due to lack of excitement from the crowd - the packed balconies and sea of NewDad merch or maroon Galway United jerseys could attest to their anticipation. Rather it was the knowledge that there wasn’t only one good spot to enjoy the show. NewDad was able to put on a performance that reached all nooks and crannies of the venue, from the adoring fans clinging to the barricade to the couple dancing in their own world near the exit.
