Atlanta-based indie rock artist girlpuppy (Becca Harvey) recently played a special release show at New York City’s Baby’s All Right in support of her sophomore album, Sweetness. The night celebrated the record’s arrival last month via Captured Tracks and featured a setlist of songs off Sweetness, as well as a couple of older fan favorites. This particular release show was supported by artists Shane T. and Scarlet Rae. Although it was a Thursday evening, Baby’s quickly filled up, with fans coming from all over to support Becca and her band.
Sweetness departs from the folk-tinged sound of her 2022 debut album, When I’m Alone, and dips into the alt-pop world, mixing elements of dream-pop, shoegaze, and pop-rock. The album covers themes such as self-discovery, heartbreak, and love. While the song “Beaches” features a country sound, tracks such as “Champ” and “For You Two” fall more into the pop category. Becca’s ability to blend multiple genres into one cohesive album demonstrates her musical versatility, which is complimented by her strong vocals and powerful songwriting ability. Overall, Sweetness is a cohesive assortment of songs that perfectly encapsulate Becca’s artistic and personal growth.
