Flipturn in Los Angeles

Flipturn lit up The Novo in Los Angeles last week, marking the halfway point of their promotional tour for their latest album “Burnout Days.” Led by vocalist Dillon Basse, the band came out swinging, showcasing their unique alternative sound and musicality. Basse’s one-of-a-kind voice rings through the entire venue, his uptempo vibrato creating a vulnerable angst that invites the audience into his personal life, perspectives, and psyche. He sings with a kind of unrestrained purity, combining with the band’s poetic lyrical style to create some of the most captivating musical experiences I’ve ever been a part of.

At the show, I reconnected with a friend I had met on a film project several months prior, who had told me that he worked with Flipturn during their early days. He introduced me to his friends during the second half of the show, and the whole group enthusiastically began sharing heartfelt stories of the group’s humble origins. He even showed me videos of them recording the band’s first albums in his living room, expressing that they have always been some of the most genuine, kindhearted people he had ever met. As the band closed the show with early hits like “Chicago” and “Nickel,” he perfectly summed up the group’s sentiment:

“I’m just so proud of the guys, they’ve come so far and I can’t think of anybody more deserving of success like this. This album is their best yet, and the best part is that they’re only going up from here”.
